58% of Spending Made with Debit Cards and other Digital Transactions News briefs from 11/19/24

  • Debit cards not using prepaid funds accounted for 58% of U.S. card spending in 2022, the Atlanta Fed noted in a review of a Federal Reserve Payments Study released last week. Credit cards were used for 36% of payments and 6% of payments were made with prepaid debit cards.
  • Cantaloupe Inc. will serve as the official point-of-sale provider for the Christmas Around the World event, planned for Northeast Ohio from late November through Jan. 4. The fair, which will feature dining and shopping, is expected to draw in excess of 100,000 attendees.
  • Visa Inc. said its Visa Direct payment service will work with Dash Solutions, a payments-technology provider, and health-care technology platform Zelis in an effort to streamline health-care disbursements to consumers.
  • Beacon, a technology platform that aims to serve immigrants settling in Canada, announced it will launch a payments app, Beacon Money, in January to serve the same market. The product includes a Visa prepaid card and banking and payments technology from Digital Commerce Group.
  • Thumzup Media Corp., whose platform enables marketers to pay consumers through Venmo and PayPal for social-media posts, said it plans to offer payments to its gig workers via Bitcoin.
  • ACI Worldwide Inc. has agreed to provide fraud-prevention and -management technology to Zimswitch, the national payments switch in Zimbabwe.
  • Idex Biometrics, a developer of payment cards shielded by biometric authentication, said Cellfie Global, a South Korean smart card maker, will manufacture metal and plastic bank- and fintech-issued cards for expected launch in the U.S., European, and Asian markets. The arrangement boasts a production capacity of 100 million cards annually, according to Idex.
  • Spend management provider Payhawk said it will use J.P. Morgan Payments to enable its enterprise customers in the United Kingdom and Europe to store, exchange, and send funds in more than 30 currencies.
  • The global payments platform Wirex said it will work with Banking Circle to offer such services as global Wirex bank accounts, instant bank transfers, and faster payments.
  • Text-based payments provider Solutions by Text LLC appointed Rahul Gupta, former chief executive of RevSpring and a Fiserv executive, and Flint Lane, founder of Billtrust, to its board of directors.
