Klarna Adds ChatGPT as an Enhancement to Online Shopping

ChatGPT, the artificial intelligence-based chatbot developed by OpenAI, is being rolled out by Klarna AB to provide what the payments platform calls personalized and intuitive shopping experiences. Online shoppers will be able to ask Klarna, through the chatbot, for product recommendations, as well as receive links to shop recommended products through Klarna’s search and compare tool. 

While Klarna says it will not be using ChatGPT for payments, the company joins Stripe Inc. as one of the first payments companies to adopt the technology in any capacity. Stripe announced earlier this month it was incorporating ChatGPT’s natural-language technology into its products and services.

Klarna will enable the ChatGPT plugin for ChatGPT users, beginning with ChatGPT Plus subscribers in the United States and Canada, and gradually roll the technology out to other regions.

“Klarna is in a unique position to leverage the best technology and data to help people discover new products and solve problems for consumers at every stage of the shopping journey, and we’ll continue innovating to bring these services to our consumers,” Klarna chief executive and co-founder Sebastian Siemiatkowski says in a prepared statement.

Siemiatkowski adds that Klarna, known for its buy now, pay later products, sees the plugin as a value-added feature intended to help shoppers.

The integration of ChatGPT, which was developed by San Francisco-based artificial intelligence research laboratory OpenAI, builds on a strategy Klarna has articulated that sees the payments company positioning itself as a starting point for consumer purchases. Klarna works with 500,000 retail partners and is used by 150 million consumers and 26 million app users worldwide, the Sweden-based company says, and handles 2 million transactions daily. Klarna’s retail partners include H&M, Saks, Sephora, Macys, IKEA, and Nike.

The work with OpenAI is not Klarna’s first foray into deploying artificial intelligence. Earlier this month, Klarna launched Klarna Badges, in conjunction with Clarity AI, a sustainability-technology platform that uses machine learning and big data to deliver environmental and social insights to investors, organizations, and consumers. The badges program enables Klarna users to access such metrics about their electronics purchases as information on brands’ greenhouse gas emissions and energy derived from renewable resources.
