Amazon.com Inc.’s Just Walk Out payment technology is providing checkout-free shopping at Quick Six, a concept store at Six Flags Great Adventure, a Jackson, N.J., theme park.
Announced recently, the store uses the Amazon-developed technology that requires consumers to scan a code on their cellphones that is tied to a stored payment method. As they shop, cameras and sensors note an item’s movement. When finished shopping, consumers simply walk out of the store past a scanner that charges or debits their payment credentials.
Merchants other than Amazon that also use the technology include Hudson Group at some airport locations and Transact Campus Inc., which will offer it to educational institutions.
The Six Flags Great Adventure store is a collaboration between Amazon, Six Flags, and Coca-Cola, which stocks the 400-square-foot store with refreshments. Later this year, a Magic Mountain location in Los Angeles will open with the tech.
Should the New Jersey and Los Angeles stores meet expectations, other Six Flag locations—there are 27 in the United States, Canada, and Mexico—could see stores with the Just Walk Out capability.
The advantages are clear, especially in a busy amusement park, proponents say. “This will expedite the guest experience and cut down on lines to purchase snacks and drinks,” Rachel Chahal, Coca-Cola director of amusement/entertainment partnerships, says via email to Digital Transactions News. “We are able to move people through the store in about 60 seconds.”
The ability to integrate the checkout-free Amazon Just Walk Out technology into the Six Flags payment system helped make the selection easier, Chahal says.
