Luxury Retailer LVMH Adopts Tap to Pay on iPhone

A handful of U.S. retail outlets owned by luxury-goods retailer LVMH Group will offer Tap to Pay on iPhone later this year, the Paris-based company announced Wednesday.

Tap to Pay on iPhone enables merchants to accept contactless payments using a payment-acceptance app and an off-the-shelf iPhone. The service, announced in 2022 and now available from a variety of payments processors, does not require a separate dongle.

LVMH says the acceptance method is coming first to its Sephora, Christian Dior Couture, Celine, Tiffany & Co., and Louis Vuitton stores. There are no card-brand-issued transaction caps on contactless payments in the United States.

“The introduction of Tap to Pay on iPhone in LVMH U.S. stores will contribute to offering our customers a purchase experience that is fluid, transparent, and protected. This solution also reflects the growing demand among our customers for contactless payment and digital-wallet transactions,” Franck Le Moal, LVMH Group IT director, said in a statement. LVMH did not say how many stores will participate in accepting Tap to Pay on iPhone, nor exactly when the service will be available.

LVMH is among top luxury brands to adopt the technology. Earlier this year, Tulip, a point-of-sale system maker for omnichannel and enterprise merchants, added support for the tech via an integration with processor Adyen NV. Square, a unit of Block Inc., added Tap to Pay on iPhone support in September, as did NewStore Inc., a payments-platform provider specializing in mobile transactions.

And in April, Web registrar and payments provider GoDaddy Inc. added support for the technology.

Contactless payment capability without a dongle is not exclusive to Apple Inc.’s iPhones. Vendors such as MagicCube Inc. offer tap to pay with Android devices. Square added Tap to Pay on Android support in April, as did Stripe Inc. in February.
