GoCardless Picks Up JustGiving And Other Digital Transactions News briefs from 1-9-24

  • GoCardless said it will process open-banking payments made on JustGiving, an online donation platform, replacing American Express Co.
  • FirstOntario Credit Union said it is preparing to launch open banking through connections to Everlink Payment Services Inc. and open-banking technology platform Flinks. The federal government in Canada said in November it planned to announce an open-banking framework in this year’s budget.
  • Fiserv Inc. released its inaugural Small Business Index, which measures spending at U.S. small businesses. The December index, at 138, indicates small-business spending then was 38% higher than the base period in 2019. The index also provides data on merchant segments and by state. Fiserv officials say the data later on will be broken out by payment method.
  • Cryptocurrency payments startup Zebec, based in New York City, announced an expansion of its operations to Japan. The company also offers the Zebec Instant Card, which runs on the Visa and Mastercard networks and supports spending in the U.S. dollar and Japanese Yen.
  • Car IQ Inc., a provider of technology for in-car payments, announced it has added Exxon and Mobil stations to its network of Car IQ Pay locations. Through Car IQ Pay, vehicles will link directly to the pump to pay for fuel.
  • Apple Inc. said its Vision Pro headset, set for a U.S. launch Feb. 2, will support Apple Pay, with authentication based on the user’s iris. The $3,500 virtual-reality device features visionOS, which lets users interact with what they’re seeing via eyes, hands, or voice.
  • A new agreement with Visa Inc. will allow customers of Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce and its Simplii digital-banking unit to send funds to a wider range of overseas digital wallets than had been the case under a previous agreement, including the Philippines, China, Bangladesh, and Kenya.
  • SurgePays Inc., a payments platform specializing in services for the underbanked, said it has closed on its acquisition of the point-of-sale equipment and software operations of DNR Business Solutions Inc., doing business as ClearLine Mobile. Terms were not announced.
  • PayTech Women announced its 2024 board of directors with Polly Van Duser, vice president of talent acquisition at One Inc., as president.
  • Alfred F. Kelly Jr., former Visa chief executive and executive chair, joined Berkshire Partners as an advisory director beginning in March.
