Eye on Travel: Cruise Line Gets Onboard With PayPal; Worldline And Freedom Eye Travel Expansion

It may be the midst of winter, but some payment companies are preparing for the travel season.

Travelers booking passage on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship can now use their PayPal Holdings Inc. digital wallet to pay for their cruises. PayPal says the payment option is available for trips with Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, and Regent Seven Seas Cruises, all operated by NCL.

The Miami-based cruise line also continues to use PayPal Braintree for its credit card processing for reservations and all onboard purchases. NCL operates 32 ships.

PayPal Braintree first began processing onboard payments in July 2022 with the launch of the Norwegian Prima ship and later expanded to the three cruise lines for both reservations and onboard payments.

In related news, the processor Worldline says it will work with FreedomPay, a Philadelphia-based payments and gateway provider, to cater to the travel and hospitality sector.

Paris-based Worldline says the partnership will integrate a FreedomPay-developed connection with Worldline’s acquiring and dynamic currency conversion services for both card-present and card-not-present transactions. Expected to be available midyear, the service is aimed at travel and hospitality merchants in Europe and could be extended to retail and other sectors later.

Among the benefits are improved customer experience and better data insights, Worldline says.
