Some Debit Card Fraud Increased in 2017 and other Digital Transactions News briefs from 3/7/18

  • The number of debit cards compromised at ATMs and merchant terminals increased 10% in the United States last year, according to antifraud-technology vendor FICO.
  • Newtek Business Services Inc., owner of Newtek Merchant Solutions and Premier Payments LLC, says its payments unit processed $6.1 billion in volume last year.
  • Point-of-sale terminal maker Ingenico Group said Choice Hotels, which includes Cambria Hotels, Comfort Inn, Quality Inn, and Sleep Inn brands, will use the iSC Touch 480 POS terminals across its 5,000 franchised hotels. The devices enable Choice Hotel operators to accept EMV chip cards, contactless, and magnetic-stripe payments. Choice Hotels also will support encryption and tokenization for payment data.
  • Processor Total System Services Inc. (TSYS) announced that Walmart Inc. will use its new Advanced AuthControl system for qualified health-care-related purchases at Walmart and Sam’s Club stores.
  • Applebee’s restaurant franchiser RMH Franchise Holdings said that on Feb. 13 it discovered malware on point-of-sale systems at more than 150 of its locations; the malware may have compromised credit and debit card numbers, cardholder homes, expiration dates, and verification codes.
  • Pockitapp, a mobile application that lets users convert pocket change into digital funds in checking, savings, or gift card accounts, launched in central Florida.
  • Nearly half of U.S. adults who have owned a credit card have allowed other persons to use the card, and of those, 35% say they were burned by the borrower’s overspending, failure to repay any debt, and failure to return the card, according to a Creditcards.com poll of 2,253 persons.
  • Mastercard Inc. announced that it has put its physical and digital payments teams into one organization. The move came as Garry Lyons, currently chief innovation officer, prepares to leave the card brand on June 1 to launch a new outside venture that will provide services to Mastercard and its customers. He came to Mastercard when it bought Orbiscom in 2008.
