Braintree Extend Debuts and other Digital Transactions News briefs from 3/28/18

  • PayPal Holdings Inc.’s Braintree e-commerce processing unit launched Braintree Extend, a service offering that includes support for transaction services, rewards and loyalty, and contextual commerce.
  • Brazil’s central bank this week announced a cap on debit card interchange of 0.80% of the transaction, while averaging no more than 0.50%, according to press reports. The measures could slash card issuers’ interchange revenues by as much as 40%.
  • Electronics retailer Newegg said consumers in Canada can now pay using Bitcoin on its Web site. Newegg added Bitcoin as a U.S. payment option in 2014.
  • Ripple and its executives donated $29 million worth of XRP, Ripple’s digital currency, to public schools through DonorsChoose.org. The funds were immediately converted to U.S. dollars.
  • Etherparty Smart Contracts Inc., a blockchain technology company, announced a partnership with CoinPayments, a cryptocurrency payment gateway.
  • Square Inc. has combined its Appointments app for small merchants with its point-of-sale payments service. The combined product is free for sole proprietors, even though the Appointments service normally costs $30 per month.
  • PSCU reported that one of its founding members, the 150,00-member Achieva Credit Union in Dunedin, Fla., has rejoined the co-operative and will use PSCU services for credit and debit card processing, ATM terminal driving, and bill payments.
  • Data-services provider Womply released its Retention Impact Study that analyzed the company’s impact on merchant retention.
  • Financial technology provider Computer Services Inc. promoted Andy Elliot from senior vice president of customer experience to chief experience officer; named Bob Ezell, formerly senior vice president of product strategy, as chief product officer; and Diva Narayanan as chief technology officer. Narayanan had been senior vice president of CSI’s software engineering group.
