Google Pay Coming to Browsers and other Digital Transactions News briefs from 5/4/18

  • Google announced that Google Pay users soon will be able to use the service to make purchases within the Chrome, Safari, and Firefox browsers. Once a card has been added to a Google Pay account, users don’t need to re-enter their payment info. If using Chrome, Google Pay can automatically complete the billing, shipping, and payment fields. Apple Inc.’s Apple Pay has offered a similar capability since 2016.
  • The messaging and photo-sharing service Instagram has added a payment capability allowing selected users to store credit or debit card data, set a PIN, and make purchases from certain outlets, according to media reports. Instagram is a unit of Facebook Inc. The move follows a similar effort in February by the rival messaging service Snapchat, according to TechCrunch.
  • In related news, Facebook and United Kingdom-based fintech company Flyt said Flyt’s pay-at-table service is now available on Facebook Messenger via chatbot, marking the first time this type of payment service is available on Facebook.
  • Live Nation Entertainment Inc. said its mobile ticket sales increased 36% in the first quarter following the launch of a redesigned m-commerce experience. Overall, mobile ticket sales at Live Nation account for almost 40% of all ticket sales, with conversion rates improving by more than 20%.
  • Fleetcor Technologies Inc. announced it made a minority investment in P97 Networks Inc., which provides mobile-commerce and marketing services to the petroleum industry. Fleetcor also said it will use P97 technology in its U.S. fuel-card programs.
