Gearfire Payments Targets Shooting-Sports Industry and other Digital Transactions News briefs from 11/30/18

  • Independent sales organization Gearfire Payments announced new plans to focus on reducing payment costs for the shooting-sports industry.
  • Atom Tickets, a mobile-ticketing service for the movie industry, said it integrated SMG Access, a loyalty program from Studio Movie Grill, an operator of movie theaters featuring in-theater dining.
  • Target Corp. may be testing Apple Pay at its Metreon location in San Francisco, according to anecdotal evidence reported by 9to5Mac.com. Apparently, a handful of shoppers have used Apple Pay and others used contactless cards. It’s also possible the store may have accidentally switched on near-field communication by mistake, according to 9to5Mac.com. Target has held out from accepting mobile wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay. However, the anticipated adoption of contactless cards next year may change that since the cards and the smart phone-based wallets both rely on NFC.
  • Costa, a big coffee chain in the United Kingdom, introduced the “Clever Cup,” a reusable coffee cup with a contactless chip attached to pay for fill-ups. The technology from Barclaycard links to Barclay’s bPay app and can be used for contactless payments generally. The cup is said to be aimed at reducing the volume of disposable coffee cups going into landfills.
  • Ohio will accept Bitcoin from businesses in payment of sales, withholding, and 21 other state taxes, making the state the first in the union to accept the cryptocurrency for tax payments. Processor BitPay will convert payments into dollars for the state.
  • North American Bancard Holdings LLC named David Greenberg chief administrative officer. Greenberg, who previously worked at Berkwotiz, Trager & Trager LLC overseeing the law firm’s Electronic Transactions Processing Group, will oversee NAB’s collections, compliance, credit, legal, risk, and underwriting business units.
  • Credit-union payment processor Co-Op Financial Services hired Bruce Dragt as chief product officer. Dragt most recently was an executive vice president at specialty payments provider YapStone Inc. and before that held various positions at First Data Corp. for 13 years.
