Only 14% Use Mobile Payments and other Digital Transactions News briefs from 1/29/19

  • Just 14% of U.S. smart-phone users are using mobile-payments services from smart-phone makers, such as Apple Pay from Apple Inc., according to a survey from Juniper Research, which says “the window of opportunity in the U.S. for mobile-payment providers like Apple Pay and Google Pay is closing fast.” The survey covered more than 1,000 consumers in the U.S. and the U.K.
  • Aliant Payments said it will offer free cryptocurrency processing to qualifying U.S. and European merchants that open a merchant account for credit and debit card processing.
  • Rewards platform provider Cardlytics Inc. released an infographic about spending habits surrounding the National Football League’s Super Bowl. In it, Cardlytics found that spending on pizza increased 187% in Boston during last year’s game, but in Los Angeles consumers spent 37% more on tacos. The game between the New England Patriots and the Los Angeles Rams is scheduled for Feb. 3.
  • Commerce Bancshares Inc. said its Commerce Bank unit now issues contactless-enabled debit and reloadable prepaid cards bearing the Visa Inc. brand.
  • Processor Global Payments Inc. extended to the Canadian market its Greater Giving software products, which manage online payment, event management, and mobile bidding for fundraising events.
  • SafeCharge Ltd. said it is offering real-time automated clearing house payments via Mazooma Inc.’s eCheck Select to the regulated U.S. online-gambling industry.
  • Cross-border mobile payment firm Citcon said it and East West Bank formed an alliance to offer Chinese mobile wallets to U.S. merchants.
  • Visa Inc. introduced VisaNet processing in Argentina, a move it says will lift its share of domestic transaction processing in the Latin American and Caribbean market by more than 10 percentage points.
  • In related news, Visa announced it had extended through the 2025 season its agreement to be the official payments technology partner for the National Football League.
  • Vending machine payments provider USA Technologies Inc. appointed Glenn Goold, a consultant to the company since October, as interim chief financial officer. Goold replaces former CFO Priyanka Singh, who resigned earlier this month as part of a series of management changes in the wake of a probe into the company’s accounting practices. USAT said it is looking for a permanent CFO among internal and external candidates.
