Grocer Save A Lot Adds In-Store Cash Acceptance for Amazon PayCode Purchases

Consumers that want to pay cash for their Amazon.com Inc. purchases now have another option in the St. Louis area.

Save A Lot launched the ability for consumers to use Amazon PayCode, the e-retailer’s cash-payment service, at several Save A Lot locations in the grocer’s hometown. It expects to expand the service to more than 400 stores by the end of 2020.

With PayCode, Amazon shoppers place orders online and then pay for the purchases later in person, in cash, with no additional fees. At checkout, the shopper selects the Amazon PayCode payment option to receive a Quick Response code and a number associated with the transaction.

At Save A Lot locations, Amazon PayCode customers will use a designated checkout lane that has PayCode enabled. A sign in and above the lane indicates PayCode acceptance. Shoppers will be able to combine a PayCode transaction with a grocery-store transaction, the grocer says. When the shopper asks to make a PayCode payment, the cashier asks for the PayCode at the same time as he or she scans any other items in the transaction. Payment is then collected. There are no additional fees for PayCode payments. Save A Lot says placing PayCode acceptance in checkout lanes is more efficient than a separate customer-service area.

As Save A Lot’s current hardware-based system migrates to a software-based one, the company expects to enable PayCode support in any lane.

Save A Lot also will offer Amazon Hub Locker, a secure delivery option that enables shoppers to pick up or return Amazon packages at no additional cost.

“We are focused on improving our customers’ lives through innovation,” Ian Bone, senior director of corporate development at Save A Lot, said in a statement. “Our work with Amazon is only the first example of how Save A Lot is delivering unmatched value to our local communities with leading-edge technologies and strategic partnerships.”

Amazon PayCode also is currently available at more than 15,000 agents of The Western Union Co.
