Pulse Volume up 23% and other Digital Transactions News briefs from 4/22/21

  • Discover Financial Services reported $1.6 billion in net income in the 2021 first quarter, a reversal of a $61 million loss in the same quarter in 2020. Discover said its payment services volume was $75.9 billion, a 19% increase year-over-year. Dollar volume on its Pulse debit network increased 23% year-over-year, driven by stimulus funds and a higher average spend per transaction.
  • In related news, Discover also made its fee-based Identity Theft Protection service available to all U.S. consumers. The service is $15 per month.
  • Fraud prevention provider Signifyd debuted its Return Abuse Prevention service to help retailers reduce and manage return abuse.
  • Esports Technologies said its betting platform, Gogawi.com, now accepts more than 30 cryptocurrencies for deposits, including Bitcoin and Dogecoin.
  • In related news, cryptocurrency payments processor CoinPayments Inc. announced it will work with Ovvi LLC, a provider of point-of-sale hardware, software, and processing, to market cryptocurrency acceptance in in-store transactions.
  • GreenBox POS LLC, a payments provider specializing in blockchain technology, said it is working with cryptoasset risk-management firm Elliptic Enterprises Ltd. to install anti-money-laundering systems for cryptoassets.
  • Shakepay, a Montreal-based fintech that enables Canadians to buy and sell digital currency and pay others, said it will launch a Visa prepaid card for its customers. The card will use Marqeta’s issuing platform and be issued by People’s Bank, Marqeta’s sponsoring financial institution.
  • Installment payments provider Splitit launched Splitit Plus, an integrated payment gateway for installment payments.
  • Affirm Inc. said retailer Ulla Johnson now offers Affirm’s point-of-sale financing at checkout.
  • Working with Visa Inc.’s merchant-acquiring unit for the Middle East, payments-technology provider PayTabs said it has launched its PayTabs Touch product to allow merchants to accept contactless transactions on their own mobile phones.
