Google Drops Bank Account Ambitions and other Digital Transactions News briefs from 10/4/21

  • Google, a unit of Alphabet Inc., dropped its plans to offer banking services to consumers, The Wall Street Journal reported late Friday. Google announced in November it intended to debut Plex, a mobile-first bank account integrated into Google Pay.
  • Payments provider Park Place Payments said it will pay $500 to clients that drop the service within the first six months. The offer comes in lieu of termination fees, according to the 3-year-old company.
  • Processor Lightspeed Commerce Inc. announced the closing of its acquisition of e-commerce platform Ecwid Inc. for $163.6 million in cash plus issuance of 4.8 million subordinate voting shares in the capital of Lightspeed. The deal, originally valued at $500 million in cash and stock, was announced in June.
  • Payments provider Nuvei Corp. appointed Max Attias group chief technology officer, Guillaume Conteville chief marketing officer, and Nikki Zinman chief people officer. Attias was promoted from chief operating officer to succeed Keith Birdsong, who is retiring. Conteville comes to the company from Mastercard Inc., Zinman from global learning company Pearson.
  • Payments provider Paya Holdings Inc. appointed Sid Singh to its board of directors. Singh is president, United States information solutions, at Equifax Inc.
