Ingenico Debuts an EMV-Capable Mobile Acceptance Service, with U.S. Launch in 2014

Payment-terminal maker Ingenico S.A. is debuting the Roam Mobile Commerce Manager in eight nations, including the United States in early 2014. The service is currently available in Mexico, France, Belgium, Italy, Australia, Brazil, and Norway.

Details about the U.S. version of Mobile Commerce Manager will be available once it launches here, Ingenico says.

Developed by Roam, a Boston-based mobile-payments technology provider for merchants now owned by point-of-sale terminal maker Ingenico, the Mobile Commerce Manager enables merchants to use mobile point-of-sale applications. It also enables entities like telecommunication companies and acquirers to oversee and manage the service on various devices. Ingenico says the Mobile Commerce Manager is mobile-device and payment-hardware agnostic.

That means merchants can use the Mobile Commerce Manager payment app on mobile devices using Google Inc.’s Android operating system and Apple Inc.’s iOS system, Ingenico says. And the companies that supply the apps, such as telecommunications companies and acquirers, can use Mobile Commerce Manager to manage the apps, Ingenico says.

For example, merchants using Ingenico’s iCMP, a chip card reader that connects via Bluetooth to mobile devices, could use Mobile Commerce Manager to monitor the device. The service also can be used to handle merchant boarding and transaction tracking, among other uses.

The service is designed for use with chip cards that adhere to the EMV standard, in common use for payments outside of the United States. “This is a significant benefit for merchants updating to EMV as the same engine can power both their legacy systems as well as new EMV-capable PIN pads,” an Ingenico spokesman says.
