Afterpay’s BNPL Spending up 230% and other Digital Transactions News briefs from 12/1/21

  • Buy now, pay later spending in the United States through provider Afterpay Ltd. has risen 230% in the past 12 months, with a 34% increase year-over-year during the Black Friday through Cyber Monday period, the company said. Square Inc.’s acquisition of Afterpay, announced in August, is expected to close in the first quarter next year.
  • David Marcus, who headed up the Diem (formerly Libra) cryptocurrency project for Meta Platforms Inc. (formerly Facebook Inc.) said he is leaving the company at year’s end to pursue other projects. Marcus was president of PayPal Holdings Inc. before coming to Facebook in 2014. He will be succeeded by Stephane Kasriel, who joined Meta last year from Upwork Inc.
  • Former Mastercard Inc. chief executive Ajay Banga has joined global growth equity firm General Atlantic as vice chairman.
  • Simpl Ltd., a payments startup offering a one-tap checkout and buy now, pay later functionality, raised $40 million in a Series B round led by Valar Ventures and IA Ventures.
  • InComm Payments said it is integrating hearing services into InComm Healthcare’s multi-wallet benefit card via an agreement with TruHearing, a provider of hearing-benefit solutions.
  • Payments-technology provider ACI Worldwide Inc. said long-time client PayPoint, a payment-services provider, will adopt ACI Acquiring, which enables alternative payment methods alongside traditional technologies.
  • Credit union service organization PSCU said New England Federal Credit Union selected PSCU for its credit and debit card processing services.
  • Payments provider Digital River Inc. announced a partnership with e-commerce platform Gorilla Group to provide e-commerce capabilities to both business-to-business and business-to-consumer companies.
  • Point-of-sale services provider Electronic Payments said Juul Labs, makers of vaping devices for nicotine, is a POS partner.
