AmEx’s First Debit Card and other Digital Transactions News Briefs from 10/28/21

  • American Express Co. launched a fully digital business checking account for U.S. small and mid-sized businesses that includes the first-ever AmEx-issued debit card. The account also connects with existing AmEx credit cards.
  • FIS Inc.’s Worldpay merchant-acquiring unit will provide payment services to Major League Baseball’s Washington Nationals under a new agreement. The pact includes payments for tickets, food, beverages, merchandise and sports betting, and also covers a renovation of the team’s Champions Club, which will be renamed the FIS Champions Club.
  • Payments provider Klarna Bank AB announced a multi-year partnership with The Macerich Co., a real-estate investment trust, under which Klarna will be the exclusive advertiser and promoter of buy now, pay later services across Macerich’s nationwide portfolio of regional malls, which have more than 400 million visitors annually.
  • Bank of America Corp. announced a new fraud-prevention service for corporate and public-sector clients called Account Validation. Before initiating an electronic credit or debit payment, a user can verify the status of an account and authenticate the account owner. The service is supported by Early Warning Services LLC, a risk-control firm owned by seven U.S. financial institutions, including BofA.
  • Clio, a provider of technology for law firms, launched its Clio payments platform.
  • Soon, a consumer wealth-management platform, said it is working with Galileo Processing and Central Payments, a unit of Central Bank of Kansas City, to support its planned Soon Visa debit card.
  • Buy now, pay later provider Zip Co. Ltd. said its recently ended, four-day Zip Fest shopping promotion generated a 130% year-over-year and 16% month-over-month increase in sales, and a 12% increase in net new customers.
  • Payments provider Paysafe Ltd. announced it has worked with mobile-technology developer Bitrise to ease the mobile functionality of its Skrill and Neteller digital wallets. Paysafe says it processes payments for 75% of operators in the U.S. iGaming market.
