Bitcoin Value Swoons and other Digital Transactions News briefs

  • Vantiv Inc.’s acquisition of Worldpay Group plc, which was announced in August, officially closed Tuesday, forming a company called Worldpay Inc. The combined company processes more than 40 billion transactions worth more than $1.5 trillion annually around the world.
  • Over a 24-hour period, a swooning Bitcoin shed nearly $2,600 in value by midmorning Tuesday, when it traded at around $11,800. As recently as last Thursday, it commanded a price near $15,000. Investor nervousness over the possibility of further cryptocurrency crackdowns in South Korea and China and bearish sentiment among futures traders are dragging Bitcoin’s value down, according to Coindesk.
  • Datacap Systems Inc. said it completed U.S. EMV level 3 certification with Heartland Payments for ID Tech devices.
  • Unattended-payments specialist USA Technologies Inc. noted 16 customers have agreed to use services from its recently acquired Cantaloupe Systems, which provides software to manage logistics, routing, inventory, and related services.
  • Tipalti, whose software automates payables, launched a partner program for accounting firms, financial institutions, system integrators, and other entities whose clients might use the platform.
  • Fidelity National Information Services Inc. (FIS) has agreed to provide a card-processing platform to Australia’s ME Bank.
  • Groundwork, whose software enables electronic payments for youth sports, said it has introduced enhancements, including expanded reporting capability and a public link for open-ended signups for sports clubs.
  • Softpoint LLC, a provider of point-of-sale software for the hospitality industry, introduced a smart watch called Watchpoint, which alerts servers that a pay-at-table transaction via EMV has completed and whether the diner would like the server to return to the table. Watchpoint works with the company’s Datapoint payment-processing product.
  • Payment-fraud and risk mitigation firm Kount Inc. named Tom War, a former TEKsystems Global Services West Region executive, as vice president of worldwide sales.
