Get ready for even more sophisticated in-car virtual assistance. Cerence Inc., which develops in-car virtual technology, has launched Co-Pilot, its advanced assistant that uses artificial intelligence and vehicle integration to help with such tasks as ordering and paying for a coffee while a mile away. Cerence says its technology—it has created voice assistants and similar services—already is in 400 million vehicles.
Burlington, Mass.-based Cerence announced Monday that Co-Pilot will use the vehicle’s sensors and data to augment the driving experience. The proactive stance of the software could alert drivers to critically low oil pressure, provide maintenance reminders, as well as handle service-oriented tasks such as housing a digital wallet, controlling smart home devices, and provide in-car entertainment options, like karaoke. Cerence says Co-Pilot will work with third-party assistants, such as Apple Inc.’s CarPlay and Google’s Android Auto.
“Voice-powered interaction has become ubiquitous in our daily lives, but it’s time that we expand upon its capabilities and chart the road ahead–a fully multi-modal, multi-sensor, AI-based experience,” Stefan Ortmanns, Cerence’s chief executive, said in a statement.
In May, Cerence expanded its Cerence Pay network with the addition of P97 Networks Inc., which develops cloud-based mobile commerce, in-vehicle payments, and digital marketing services. Announced in 2020, Cerence Pay is designed to provide a seamless payment transaction from intent to authentication via voice and facial biometrics to purchases. Cerence Pay can be used for fueling, ordering takeout food or setting reservations, and to pay for parking.
