Consumer Spending up 8.7% in February and other Digital Transactions News briefs from 3/9/22

  • Consumer spending in the United States, in terms of February retail sales excluding auto, was up 8.7% over February 2021 and 17.3% over February 2019, according to Mastercard Inc.’s SpendingPulse report, which monitors in-store and online retail sales.
  • President Joe Biden signed an executive order requiring federal agencies to work out a common approach to cryptocurrency. The order, which did not set policy, also requires the Treasury Department to issue a report on the future of money, and requests that federal agencies investigate how the country could create a central bank digital currency.
  • The Federal Reserve launched its FedNow Service Provider Showcase, an online service that links financial institutions with businesses aiming to use the FedNow real-time payments service when it launches. So far, 74 providers have provided fact sheets and videos. FedNow is scheduled to launch next year or in 2024.
  • The Portland Timbers, a major league soccer club, has selected Shift4 Payments Inc. and its VenueNext platform to handle payments at its stadium, Providence Park in Portland, Ore.
  • Card-issuing platform Marqeta Inc. said its service has been selected by Citi Commercial Cards to provide tokenizing of card credentials for inclusion in mobile wallets.
  • Payments provider Paysafe Ltd. said it has chosen J.P. Morgan as its core banking provider. Services will include handling of card-network payment settlements, merchant payment flows, and multi-currency settlements.
  • Payments provider ACI Worldwide Inc. launched Fraud Scoring Services, a platform offering machine learning to support financial institutions with real-time fraud detection.
  • Passengers booking tickets on Copa Airlines can pay in monthly installments through Uplift Inc., a buy now, pay later provider specializing in travel.
  • Buy now, pay later provider Sezzle Inc. said retailer Sportsman’s Guide will offer its BNPL option to consumers.
  • American Express Co. said it will open a new Centurion Lounge at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in 2023.
