DoorDash Enables Online SNAP/EBT Payments for Dollar General

On-demand delivery platform DoorDash Inc. says Dollar General Corp. is the latest retailer to accept SNAP/EBT online payments in the DoorDash marketplace. SNAP is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program that uses its own electronic benefits transfer payments service. The Dollar General addition of more than 16,000 stores nearly doubles the number of locations in the marketplace to 35,000, DoorDash says.

DoorDash launched online SNAP/EBT payment acceptance in 2023 with more than 4,000 store locations initially. A year later, the tally increased to 10,000 stores. Not quite a year ago, Walgreens enabled online SNAP/EBT acceptance via DoorDash.

Goodlettsville, Tenn.-based Dollar General says approximately 75% of U.S. consumers are located within five miles of a Dollar General store. Enabling online SNAP/EBT acceptance will make it easier for many individuals to shop at Dollar General, it says.

Dollar General, with more than 16,000 stores, is the latest retailer to enable online SNAP/EBT acceptance in the DoorDash marketplace.

San Francisco-based DoorDash says 99% of its monthly active U.S. consumers have access to at least one store that accepts SNAP in its marketplace. An estimated 41.9 million individuals received SNAP benefits, as of April 2023, according to the Pew Research Center.

A DoorDash survey in September found that 74% of SNAP recipients said online shopping helps them buy more fruits and vegetables without spending more on groceries overall. Additionally, 81% said it helps them feel less self-conscious about using their benefits.

DoorDash says the Dollar General work was done with help from Forage, a payments provider that specializes in enabling online SNAP/EBT acceptance.
