Dorsey Exits Twitter CEO Role and other Digital Transactions News briefs from 11/29/21

  • Jack Dorsey, chief executive of both Square Inc. and Twitter Inc., is stepping down effective immediately as chief executive of social-media platform Twitter, Dorsey posted on Twitter. He will be succeeded by Twitter chief technology officer Parag Agrawal.
  • E-commerce holiday shopping on the Monday following Thanksgiving—known as Cyber Monday—will increase 21% over the same day in 2020, ACI Worldwide Inc. forecasted in its latest holiday shopping report. For the period from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday, e-commerce transactions are expected to increase 23% compared to the same period last year.
  • American Express Co. reported its 12th annual Small Business Saturday event on Nov. 27 yielded an estimated $23.3 billion in sales at independent merchants, up 18% from $19.8 billion last year and up 19% from $19.6 billion in 2019.
  • Mastercard Inc. said, in its latest SpendingPulse report, U.S. retail sales during the Thanksgiving weekend increased 14.1% from the same time in 2020 and 5.8% from 2019. In-store sales increased 16.5% year-over-year and e-commerce sales increased 4.9% Thursday through Sunday.
  • Worldline said its Ingenico point-of-sale terminal and services unit launched its payments-platform-as-a-service product. The cloud-based service is device agnostic, meaning it can work with any payment terminal beyond the 35 million Ingenico POS devices already deployed, Worldline said.
  • Payments platform PayNearMe Inc. said it is collaborating with Pin4, a provider of technology facilitating cash payments, to allow iGaming operators to give players instant access to cash winnings through some 18,000 ATMs.
  • Mastercard Inc. said it is working with Jeeves Inc., a technology provider for spend management, to issue a locally issued card for Mexican businesses.
  • Canada’s Interac national payments network said it is adopting Microsoft Corp.’s Azure cloud technology to enable faster payments and to ease network growth.
  • Payments provider Paysafe Ltd. said its online cash-payment technology, paysafecard, will be accepted for payment in Huawei’s online App Gallery. Huawei is a provider of information-technology services and smart devices.
