Buy now, pay later options for consumers continue to grow. Nascent airline Breeze Airways will offer Uplift Inc.’s BNPL option to its travelers and Mastercard Inc. announced several more retailers joined its Mastercard Installments program.
Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Uplift said it is the exclusive BNPL option for Breeze flights. The service is integrated into the Breeze Web site and its apps.
Travelers can view how upgrades might affect their costs and its impact on their monthly BNPL installments. Uplift said travelers see the total cost of the trip upfront, along with the monthly payment amount, and can choose from three, six, or 11 monthly payments. Uplift says it works with more than 200 airlines, cruise lines, resorts, and other travel providers.
Meanwhile, Mastercard says nine more companies joined its Mastercard Installments program. They are Amount, Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s, Deserve, H&R Block, i2c, Lithic, Saks Fifth Avenue, Sutton Bank, and Walgreens.
Mastercard Installments enables participants to offer a variety of installment options to consumers, including a zero-percent-interest, pay-in-four model. “As demand for BNPL solutions continues to grow, consumers have made it clear they want greater choice, flexibility, and control in how they pay – wherever they shop,” said Linda Kirkpatrick, Mastercard president of North America, in a statement.
Pre-approved installments made via the program can be used directly on a merchant’s Web site or can be stored in digital wallets to then be used online or in-store wherever Mastercard is accepted, Mastercard says. Payments to the merchant are then made through a single use, Mastercard virtual card.
“Consumers have full transparency on lender practices upfront during the approval process, and unlike most BNPL offerings available today, consumers will continue to benefit from zero liability fraud protection, the ability to challenge unrecognized charges, and the peace of mind that comes with Mastercard’s acceptance footprint,” Mastercard said in its statement.
