In the hotly competitive restaurant point-of-sale market, acquirers are constantly devising new products and enticements to attract these merchants. To that end, SpotOn Transact LLC said Monday it has released three new point-of-sale devices for restaurants, and Shift4 Payments Inc. has enlisted hospitality expert Jon Taffer in a contest.
Announced Monday, SpotOn’s new hardware is a 15.6-inch touchscreen, labeled Station, that is available in multiple configurations. Counter is a 10-inch POS device suited for counter-serve restaurants and cafes with limited counter space. Handheld is a 6.5-inch mobile device that features integrated contactless and dip payments and can include a laser scanner for loyalty enrollment and redemptions. San Francisco-based SpotOn says the devices were designed with input from its Restaurant Advisory Council.
In addition to outfitting the devices with multiple connectivity options, SpotOn also said the software is meant to be easy to learn. “SpotOn complemented its intuitive software design with a 15-inch screen on the Station, making it easier than ever to quickly navigate complex menus and modifiers. Following input from clients, the Handheld was designed to be 6% smaller with an 18% larger screen for easier handling,” it says in a statement.
The new hardware, announced this week at the 2023 National Restaurant Association Show in Chicago, will begin to be available in the fourth quarter. SpotOn also says it is working with the processor FIS Inc. to become a payment facilitator.
Shift4 Payments Inc., the Allentown, Pa.-based payments provider, once again is working with hospitality expert Jon Taffer, this time on the new SkyTab Rescue Mission contest.
Beginning May 22, restaurant operators can apply to receive a $20,000 grant, a one-on-one personalized video consulting call with Taffer, and a complete SkyTab POS system. Participants must complete a form that provides details about their restaurants, as well as a video of no more than 2 minutes explaining why their operation deserves the award. Shift4 launched the SkyTab product line in 2019. It had worked with Taffer in 2018 to provide clients with access to Taffer’s online training course.
Entries will be accepted until July 31.
