Two iPad-based point-of-sale system providers have made announcements that, in one instance, provide another connectivity option, and in the other, puts the spotlight on the company.
Revel Systems has released a wired Internet option for its iPad-based point-of-sale product, enabling the WiFi-only device to have another connectivity option.
The Revel Ethernet Connect connects to iPads via the Lightning port on the tablets. The Ethernet cable then plugs into the Ethernet port on the Revel device.
It is available for $250 for existing Revel Systems products, and beginning June 15 it will be included as a standard element of the Revel iPad POS system.
The rationale behind the device stems from customer feedback, Revel Systems says. They were concerned about potential security threats because of unsecured WiFi connections. A wired Internet connection tends to offer a more reliable tether to the Web, Revel Systems says. And it can alleviate issues with spotty WiFi. “Internet connectivity via WiFi can also be unreliable in some environments, which could be particularly problematic for merchants during high-volume transaction times, and could cause … transaction delays,” Revel Systems said in a press release.
“With so many high-profile hacks and breaches impacting retailers last year, security is top-of-mind for our customers, whose businesses depend on being able to provide a reliable and secure point-of-sale experience,” Christopher Ciabarra, Revel Systems co-founder and chief technology officer, said in the press release.
Using the Ethernet device also can eliminate the need to use wireless routers.
Revel Systems POS systems are used in a variety of venues. It has devices in 700 Smoothie King locations, and is used in sports venues, like the Alabama State University stadium.
New Zealand-based Vend Ltd. said Apple Inc. has selected the tablet-based POS provider as part of the company’s efforts to further business use of mobile devices, specifically the iPad.
“As such, Vend is working closely with Apple to deepen its investment in iOS to ensure its mobile POS platform continues to deliver a world-class solution for retail businesses, integrates with a growing number of iOS apps for business, and reaches even more iPad users,” wrote Vaughn Roswell, Vend founder and chief executive.
Vend is part of a select group that Apple is working with.
