Square, the acquiring arm of Block Inc., is the latest to launch a dedicated kiosk for quick-service restaurants.
Announced Tuesday, Square Kiosk combines hardware and software to enable self-ordering and payment. Available later this summer for all Square for Restaurants merchants, Square Kiosk accepts multiple payment methods including contactless and chip cards.
Square touts the device as able to free restaurant staff for other tasks. For customers, the benefit is bypassing lines and easy order customization, Square says. In its Future of Commerce report released earlier this year, Square found that 78% of consumers prefer to place orders via self-serve kiosks or online.
Square Kiosk, which can be mounted in multiple ways, relies on its software to track sales data and instantly synch menu updates.
Square Kiosk’s debut comes as competitors increasingly target the kiosk format for restaurants. Fiserv Inc. launched its Clover Kiosk in April along with the Clover Kitchen Display System.
Square also released other updates. It redesigned Square Restaurants POS to improve navigation, and added customized layouts. It also added Scan to Pay, which enables customers to scan a QR code on a receipt to pay and settle their bills. An updated Orders Tab, along with all dine-in, to go, and delivery orders, are viewable on a single dashboard to help servers track orders better.
Square had not released pricing at publication.
