FIS-Worldpay Deal Closes and other Digital Transactions News briefs from 7/31/19

  • Fidelity National Information Services Inc. (FIS) said it has closed on its $43-billion cash-and-stock acquisition of processor Worldpay Inc. The deal was announced in March. Wednesday’s announcement follows approval of the merger by Worldpay shareholders last week and by the Federal Trade Commission in April.
  • Apple Inc. CEO Tim Cook reported the Apple Pay mobile-payments service is now completing nearly 1 billion transactions per month, more than twice the volume of a year ago. Apple Pay launched in 17 additional countries in the quarter ending June 29 and now is live in 47 markets, Cook said Tuesday on a conference call with analysts, according to a SeekingAlpha.com transcript. Apple Pay recently integrated with the transit system in Portland, Ore., and is beginning a rollout with New York City’s transit system with Chicago to follow later this year. Cook also said the Apple Card issued by a Goldman Sachs subsidiary is being tested by thousands of Apple employees and will launch in August.
  • Visa Inc. announced it is launching its Fintech Fast Track program in the United States. The program aims to ease integration into Visa’s network by select startups.
  • In related news, Visa said JPMorgan Chase & Co. will use the Business Payments Network offered by Visa in collaboration with Billtrust to streamline bill payments. Chase will use the platform for business-to-business payments for its commercial card users.
  • Point-of-sale equipment maker PAX Technology Inc. said TruRating, a point-of-payment feedback service, is integrated into PAX devices, starting with the PX5 and PX7 terminals.
  • Cardtronics said it will provide ATM management to First National Bank of Omaha. Cardtronics said it will own and operate all 239 ATMs the bank previously owned. Cardtronics also announced Fifth Third Bank extended an existing agreement with the ATM provider that entails placing the bank’s brand on 299 Cardtronics ATMs in Michigan Speedway stores. Some 800 other Cardtronics machines already have the bank’s branding.
  • Smart POS-device maker Poynt Inc. landed a deal for retail conglomerate Future Group and its commerce-payments affiliate LivQuik to distribute Poynt devices in India via a joint venture, SabPe. Poynt also said its gross payments volume surpassed $9 billion in the last 12 months, up 200% year-over-year.
  • Universal Air Travel Plan (UATP), a payment network owned by airlines, said its charge volume for the second quarter was up 1% year-over-year while its average ticket fell 10% to $430. Transaction count rose 12%. Absolute volume figures were not disclosed.
  • Insurer The Travelers Cos. Inc. said some of its policyholders can now receive claim payments via PayPal.
