Chevron and Texaco fuel retailers have another option when considering EMV upgrades at the pump with the debut of a Gilbarco Veeder-Root program.
Launched this week, the program enables these convenience-store operators to trade in their current non-EMV-compliant equipment from their pumps for the Passport POS service from Greensboro, N.C.-based Gilbarco Veeder-Root. The company says Chevron Corp., owner of the Texaco brand, too, is ending support for some legacy POS systems.
In their place, Gilbarco offers its Passport point-of-sale system at special pricing. Gilbarco says it is working with Chevron to release its outdoor EMV software early in 2019. The Passport POS system already supports EMV in stores. Chevron corporate stores with Gilbarco and Wayne dispensers already use the system, Gilbarco says.
“This program isn’t just about attracting retailers to our unmatched service and support or to our full suite of POS solutions,” Eric Bagden, Gilbarco director of retail solutions, said in a press release. “It’s also about providing a real roadmap to full EMV acceptance.”
Fuel retailers have until October 2020 to become EMV-compliant or face liability for payment card fraud. The shift was to happen in 2017, but was extended because of the complexity and cost of converting fuel pumps to EMV acceptance.
