Web registrar GoDaddy Inc. continued its push into payments Monday by adding Apple Inc.’s Tap to Pay on iPhone to the GoDaddy Mobile App.
The inclusion of Tap to Pay on the GoDaddy app will enable small businesses to accept contactless payments on an iPhone without a dongle. Merchants need only download the GoDaddy Mobile App on a compatible iPhone, log in, and choose Tap to Pay on iPhone to begin accepting payments.
The announcement is GoDaddy’s third venture in payments in as many months, coming in the wake of its deal with FIS Inc. and the announcement of its Payable Domains service.
Transactions will be routed through the GoDaddy Payments gateway. GoDaddy says it has positioned its getaway to compete on price. It charges merchants a flat 2.3% per in-person transaction, 2.3% + 30¢ per online transaction, and a flat 3.3% per keyed-in transaction.
“Based on our data, more than half of all in-store purchases are now contactless, making it a favorite way for consumers to make payments in-store,” Osama Bedier, president of GoDaddy Commerce, says in a statement. “Many of our U.S. customers already have an iPhone. By adding Tap to Pay on iPhone to the GoDaddy Mobile App, we will enable millions of small businesses to accept in-person payments without having to purchase additional hardware. That matters in this climate. It’s part of GoDaddy’s mission to put merchants first by making user-friendly, connected commerce tools accessible to all businesses, no matter their size.”
According to GoDaddy, one merchant benefiting from the inclusion of Tap to Pay for iPhone is Giving Daisies, a Phoenix-based nail studio and GoDaddy user. “Before I was using QR codes to accept in-person payments, and my clients would enter in their own credit card information,” Daisy Alvarado, owner of the nail salon, says in a statement. “But once I switched to offering tap payments, it’s what every client prefers.”
