Holiday Spending Grows 5.8% and other Digital Transactions News briefs

• In a study of more than 900,000 merchants, processor First Data Corp. says retail spending from Thanksgiving through CyberMonday (Nov. 28) grew 5.8% from year-earlier levels; brick-and-mortar retailers saw spending grow 4.1% while e-commerce spending jumped 14.3%.

• European software firm Comtrade Digital Services has built an automated banking platform for the Viber messaging app, allowing customers of participating banks to use chatbots make payments and perform other banking tasks. Payment recipients can receive their funds via a quick-response (QR) code at an ATM. Banks can integrate Viber through an application programming interface.

• CAN Capital Inc. said CEO Dan DeMeo and two other executives are on leaves of absence, and the online small-business lender promoted chief legal officer Parris Sanz to acting CEO as it seeks to identify underperforming assets and improve its collections processes, Bloomberg reported.

• WorldRemit said its money-transfer app is growing rapidly in Canada, with monthly remittances having hit 60,000.

• Digital Donations Inc., a provider of fundraising and payment-processing services, launched an educational platform called Digital Donations Learning Center for organizations.

• ATM maker Diebold Nixdorf said Raiffeisen Bank Group, the largest financial institution in Austria, plans to install 1,200 Diebold Nixdorf machines equipped with advanced bill-payment capability and enabled for contactless transactions with near-field communication and quick-response codes.
