Lightspeed Makes Layoffs and other Digital Transactions News briefs from 4/3/24

  • Canada-based payments processor Lightspeed Commerce Inc. announced it will reduce its headcount by roughly 10%, or 280 jobs, and make other spending cuts in operations and facilities, in a cost-cutting initiative it expects to complete by the end of June. The company has not had a profitable year since going public in 2019.
  • Amazon.com Inc. has begun taking out its Just Walk Out checkout system from its Amazon Fresh grocery stores, with the intention of replacing the technology with so-called smart carts. The technology will stay in Amazon Go stores and in some smaller Amazon Fresh stores in the United Kingdom, according to reports. Amazon operates more than 40 Amazon Fresh stores in the U.S. market.
  • Visa Inc. said it is piloting Subscription Manager, an app service financial institutions can offer cardholders to allow them to track and manage their recurring payments.
  • Olea Kiosks launched the Boulder Outdoor Kiosk, said to be aimed at payments acceptance in a variety of outdoor markets, including ticketing, parking, and EV charging.
  • Wave, a provider of money-management technology for more than 300,000 small businesses, has integrated payroll capability from Check.
  • The United Kingdom-based payments platform Zilch has chosen Checkout.com to support its global acquiring program, with an emphasis on the U.S. and U.K. markets.
  • FaceTec Inc., a provider of software for three-dimensional face verification, has appointed Geoff Slagle vice president for digital identity. Slagle comes to the company with more than 25 years of experience in various roles in the identity industry.
  • In related news, identity-software provider Prove Identity Inc. has agreed to support identity verification for BetMGM’s sports-betting platform.
  • Byte Federal Inc. has launched ByteConnect, a point-of-sale system aimed at allowing merchants to accept Bitcoin. The system, available in most of the U.S. market, includes an application programming interface, a handheld POS device, and software for e-commerce transactions.
