March Retail Sales Fall 8.7% and other Digital Transactions News briefs from 4/15/20

  • U.S. retail sales for March decreased 8.7% from February, according to figures released by the Census Bureau. One bright spot was a 28% increase in sales at food and beverage stores from March 2019. Clothing and clothing accessories store sales were down 50.7%.
  • Fidelity National Information Services Inc. (FIS) said it is supporting the states of Washington, Oregon, and Nebraska in enabling recipients in those states of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits to buy groceries online using their electronic benefit transfer cards. SNAP is administered through the U.S. Department of Agriculture. FIS, an EBT processor, said it will enable the service next in Florida, California, Idaho, and Arizona.
  • GiftCards.com announced it is donating 5% of each Visa gift card and digital gift card purchase to hunger relief organization Feeding America through April 27.
  • PCI Pal, a provider of cloud-based payments technology, introduced Rapid Remote, a service that supports PCI-compliant payments acceptance for employees of card-accepting companies who are working at home. PCI is the Payment Card Industry data-security standard.
  • CardFlight Inc. said payments provider Payroc will offer CardFlight’s SwipeSimple mobile point-of-sale service for no additional charge through July 31.
  • Chargeback Gurus was certified as a women-owned small business by the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council.
  • Mastercard Inc.’s Ethoca unit said it is working with Microsoft Inc. to allow access to digital receipts when consumers buy from Microsoft through their banks’ mobile apps. The object is to reduce transaction disputes. Mastercard said such disputes account for a growing share of global chargeback volumes.
  • Computer Services Inc., a processor for financial institutions, said it is waiving implementation and monthly service fees through June 30 for core and digital-banking clients using the company’s SPIN person-to-person payment service. The move is aimed at helping banks provide payment services for persons staying at home during the Covid-19 pandemic.
