Mastercard Processing Woes And Other Digital Transactions News briefs from 6/13/23

  • Mastercard Inc. Monday afternoon said it was looking into reports of problems with processing certain transactions on its network. Both Stripe, a major payments platform, and the U.K. bank Natwest reported issues, though Natwest said the problem had been resolved by day’s end.
  • Prepaid card provider Paysign said it completed issuer certification with Mastercard Inc.
  • ScanSource Inc., a point-of-sale terminal and cloud device distributor, said it incurred a ransomware attack on May 14 that affected some of its systems. Security teams restored operations on May 26.
  • Many consumers—74%—want a bonus gift card with purchase, according to the recently released Gift Card Gauge from Fiserv Inc. More than 1,000 U.S. consumers participated in the survey.
  • Unattended payments specialist Cantaloupe Inc. said EMV payments increased by more than 350% as a share of cashless sales at nearly 675,000 Cantaloupe-equipped vending machines, accounting for more than $500 million in sales in 2022. Cantaloupe cited the EMV standard, both its contact and contactless payments variations, as a major factor in that growth as well as upgraded equipment installed by vending operators.
  • In the past 12 months, 88% of U.S. businesses surveyed by Bottomline Technologies Inc. said they were forced to accept new payment methods. Bottomline’s eighth annual Business Payments Barometer also found that 20% of U.S. companies stopped accepting cash while larger companies added direct debits via ACH, 35%, and mobile payments, 41%. The survey included 800 financial-decision makers in the United States. It also includes data from 800 similar respondents in the United Kingdom.
  • Passport, developer of mobile payments for parking, launched its Performance Benchmarking service, aimed at allowing cities to compare parking operations with like cities and towns.
  • Bethany Little has been appointed chief executive of PatientNow, a payments and technology provider for medical practices. Little, who succeeds outgoing CEO Charles Layne, was most recently president of Community Brands.
