Mercedes pay+ Will Have U.S. Presence, One Day And Other Digital Transactions News briefs from 3/10/23

  • A Mercedes-Benz spokesperson tells Digital Transactions News its Mercedes pay+ in-car payment service that turns the vehicle into a payment device will appear in its U.S. models, though it cannot share a timeframe for that. Announced earlier this week, Mercedes pay+ will initially be available in Germany and in other European markets later this year.
  • Visa Inc. and Mastercard Inc. have stopped work on a transaction code to track purchases at gun shops, following opposition from gun lobbies and some politicians. The two networks, along with American Express Co., said in September they would for the first time create a merchant code specifically for gun sales. Earlier, the International Organization for Standardization had said it would create a category code for gun-shop sales.
  • The USDA Food and Nutrition Service said it is working with five states—Illinois, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, and Oklahoma—on a mobile contactless payment method for making grocery purchases using a consumer’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program account. The mobile option will be an alternative to the physical SNAP card.
  • Financial-technology provider Pocketbook said it is working with Bond, a platform for embedded finance, to allow small businesses to embed a digital wallet in their apps and offer it to customers.
  • Bill-payment platform Bill.com LLC said it is working with Bank of Montreal to digitize business payments through a platform called BMO Bill Connect.
  • CertiID, whose technology verifies the identity of users of wire transfers, said it found $1.4 billion in suspected wire fraud last year arising from 340,000 transactions. Instances of reported wire fraud ballooned 145% in 2022 over 2021, the company’s “State of Wire Fraud” report found.
  • Dianne Offereins, president of payment services at Discover Financial Services, will retire after a 25-year career at the company. She will be succeeded by Jason Hanson, who joined the company in 2019 and has served as senior vice president for network operations. Among other accomplishments, Offereins was instrumental in key acquisitions over the years, including those of the Pulse network and of Diners Club International.
