Merchants Target China And Other Digital Transactions News briefs from 2/7/23

  • The Merchants Payments Coalition released a letter it sent to the House Financial Services Committee arguing the Credit Card Competition Act should be enacted to block what the merchant-advocacy group calls a “national security threat” from China UnionPay, a China-based credit card network. The House committee has scheduled a hearing for this morning on “Combatting the Economic Threat from China.” The CCCA calls for merchants to have a choice of two unaffiliated networks for credit card processing.
  • A fintech called E-Squared Systems Inc. has developed a remote hosting service for ATMs and kiosks aimed at cutting operational costs and complexity. The technology is based on the Next Gen ATM architecture from ATMIA, an ATM industry association.
  • Open-banking payments provider Trustly is working with PointsBet, an online-gaming operator, and Cross River Bank to enable instant payouts in the U.S. gaming market.
  • SupraFin USA Inc., a crypto-investment and risk-management firm, said it has developed scores and ratings to help assess the riskiness of cryptocurrencies.
  • Skyscend Pay, an accounts payable platform, said its service is now integrated with Transcard’s SMART Suite, an embedded-payments platform.
  • Payments provider Klarna AB launched a global marketing campaign featuring actress Paris Hilton in a series of movies using Klarna’s payments and shopping app.
  • Car IQ Inc., a provider of technology enabling vehicles to make payments, announced a $15-million additon to its Series B funding round, allowing the company to exceed its funding target. The round was led by Forte Ventures.
  • Montgomery County, said to be Maryland’s largest, has contracted with Passport to allow users to pay for parking using the company’s app.
