- The New York attorney general is suing Dunkin’ Brands Group Inc. for allegedly violating the state’s data-breach notification act by failing to notify nearly 20,000 customers that their Dunkin’ accounts had been compromised in a series of brute force cyberattacks beginning in 2015. Hackers also gained unauthorized access to more than 300,000 accounts in 2018, and the company’s customer notifications after that breach were inaccurate, the state alleges. Dunkin’ says it has cooperated with the attorney general’s investigation for more than two years and that it was “shocked and disappointed” the state moved ahead with the case given its “lack of merit.”
- PayPal Holdings Inc. has obtained Beijing’s approval to buy a controlling stake in a domestic payments firm, which would make PayPal the first foreign firm to enter China’s payment-services market, Reuters reported.
- American Express Co. will relaunch its portfolio of seven consumer and business cobranded cards for Delta Air Lines, its biggest cobranding partner, starting Jan. 30; the updated cards will provide more ways to earn miles and feature new travel benefits.
- Point-of-sale technology provider POSaBIT Systems Corp. launched a POS system intended for cannabis merchants in California. Incorporating POSaBIT’s debit-payment service, the POS system enables consumers to purchase cannabis products using a debit card. It also incorporates METRC, California’s regulatory-tracking software for the cannabis industry.
- With outbound Chinese tourism increasing, UnionPay announced merchants in 176 countries now accept its cards.
- Revolut, a European fintech that offers mobile financial-services apps, has agreed to issue Visa cards as part of its expansion into 24 new markets, including the United States and Canada. The expansion will bring the company’s reach to 56 markets globally. Services through the cards will include banking, currency exchange, and peer-to-peer payments.
- Cross-border payments firm Flywire said a new deal with JCB International Co. Ltd. enables JCB cardholders to pay tuition at more than 2,000 schools globally that accept Flywire payments.
- MoneyGram International Inc. appointed Kamila K. Chytil chief operating officer, effective Monday. Chytil previously served as chief global operations officer at the money-transfer company.
