PCI Compliance Falling Short and other Digital Transactions News briefs

  • Payments provider NXT-ID Inc. announced its FitPay Inc. subsidiary is providing the payments technology for the vivoactive 3, a new smart watch from Garmin International Inc. Dubbed Garmin Pay, the service supports contactless payments made with Visa Inc. and Mastercard Inc. credit and debit cards from major issuing banks. Earlier this week, Fitbit Inc. introduced Fitbit Pay.
  • In all data-breach incidents investigated by Verizon, no organization breached was found to be fully compliant with the Payment Card Industry data-security standard at the time of the breach, according to the latest Verizon 2017 Payment Security Report. Compliance is on the rise, but more than 40% of global organizations assessed by Verizon still fell short of PCI standards, and of those that passed their validation, nearly half fell out of compliance within a year, Verizon said.
  • In related news, incidents of ATM and point-of-sale compromises increased 21% in the first six months compared to the same period last year, according to risk-scoring firm FICO. Compromised cards over the same period rose 39%.
  • Security provider SiteLock LLC said it recently found a vulnerability in the WooCommerce Product Vendors plugin for WordPress that could enable a criminal to control a victim’s browser and capture payment information.
  • NCR Corp. announced a partnership with Ecwid, a cloud-based e-commerce platform, that provides an improved omnichannel ordering experience with NCR Silver, a cloud-based point-of-sale service.
  • Cross-border payments provider Veem Inc. said its services are now available through Acuity, an accounting-service firm.
  • Digital-marketing provider Brandmovers Inc. announced it achieved certification as a PCI data security standard service provider.
  • DaySmart, a vendor of management software for small businesses, has integrated its platform with the Bolt P2PE card-present processing solution from merchant processor CardConnect.
  • Engineered Network Systems introduced the Verge 355z, which combines a VeriFone e355 mobile-payment device with the TC51/56 handheld touch computer in a portable case to provide merchants with a handheld mobile point-of-sale solution.
  • Carnival Corp. & plc launched a WeChat Mini program for its Costa Asia fleet in China. Starting Sept. 2, the program will allow Chinese passengers to make mobile payments and enjoy “enhanced onboard experiences,” Carnival says.
