Apple Inc.’s Tap to Pay on iPhone has lined up another point-of-sale system supporter. Tulip, a point-of-sale system maker for omnichannel and enterprise merchants, now supports the contactless payment technology via an integration with processor Adyen NV.
Announced Tuesday, the integration means Tulip merchants can use iPhones to accept payments from other contactless devices—contactless credit or debit cards, Apple Pay, Apple Watch and smart phones with other digital wallets—with a Tap to Pay on iPhone-enabled iPhone, eliminating the need for a dedicated contactless-enabled POS device.
Adyen went live with its Tap to Pay on iPhone service in July. It is one of three payment-service providers—the others are Square and Stripe—now offering the service, according to Apple’s developer site for the service. Others expected to make it available include Chase, Fiserv’s Clover, GoDaddy, North American Bancard, and FIS’s Worldpay.
Toronto-based Tulip, which was founded in 2013, counts Mulberry, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Coach among its clients, though it has not said if any merchants are using Tap to Pay on iPhone yet.
Debuting in 2022, Apple’s Tap to Pay on iPhone technology could make it easier for merchants to accept payments outside of the traditional checkout station and make it easier for consumers to pay in the aisle, especially if they want to use a digital wallet, like Apple Pay. While the technology could disintermediate traditional POS devices in some instances, it’s not likely to replace them completely, observers said last year.
