Supreme Court Divided on Surcharge Case Merits and other Digital Transactions News briefs

• The U.S. Supreme Court seems divided over whether New York’s ban on credit card surcharges is a form of speech regulation as a group of merchants challenging the state’s anti-surcharge law assert, Reuters reported. The National Retail Federation said the case is about “being able to show the cost of using a credit card without running afoul of the law.”

• Discover Financial Services will grant access to its tokenization service to PayPal Holdings Inc. as part of an agreement announced Wednesday. The deal, which expands PayPal’s reach at the point of sale, will also allow holders of Discover and PayPal accounts to use Discover cash-back bonuses at online and mobile merchants that accept PayPal. The agreement follows a similar arrangement PayPal has reached with Visa Inc. and Mastercard Inc.

• Independent sales organization Clarus Merchant Services said it is buying the assets of payments provider Anaraq Holdings LLC for an undisclosed amount.

• Bill-payment application developer BillGO said MVB Financial Corp., parent company of West Virginia-based MVB Bank, invested in BillGO and that its president and CEO is now on BillGO’s board of directors. The size of the investment wasn’t disclosed.

• Data-security services provider Trustwave launched a new transaction laundering detection service that can address illegal and undisclosed e-commerce transaction aggregation.

• FreedomPay Inc. announced that MGM Resorts International, including Aria, Bellagio, and Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, is using the FreedomPay Commerce Platform that includes point-to-point encryption.

• VeriFone Systems Inc. released the Verifone M400 multilane point-of-sale terminal, which features a large display, Bluetooth low energy support, and multiple payment type acceptance.

• Fifth Third Bancorp now offers consumers access to five mobile wallets with recently added support for Android Pay and Microsoft Wallet. The bank already supported Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, and Masterpass from Mastercard Inc.
