Tap to Pay on Android Comes to GoDaddy Merchants

Web services and payments provider GoDaddy Inc. released its Tap to Pay on Android point-of-sale service for merchants, complementing the Tap to Pay on iPhone technology it already offers.

Tap to Pay on Android enables merchants to use consumer-grade smart phones as contactless payment-acceptance devices without a need for separate hardware. The consumer just taps a credit or debit card against a compatible phone to complete a payment. Tempe, Ariz.-based GoDaddy launched Tap to Pay on iPhone using Apple Inc.’s technology in 2023.

To accept a Tap to Pay on Android payment, a GoDaddy merchant logs into the GoDaddy app and selects Tap to Pay on Android and enters the transaction amount. The consumer then taps his card, or smart phone, against the phone to complete the payment. Consumers also can pay using a wallet, such as Google Pay or Apple Pay. GoDaddy says transactions are priced at 2.3% for in-person purchases.

GoDaddy’s Tap to Pay on Android enables merchants to accept contactless payment with only a consumer-grade smart phone and the GoDaddy app.

Tap-to-pay services are in demand, GoDaddy says, citing a December survey it commissioned that found 50% of Gen Z generation, those born from 1997 to 2012, prefer paying via tap to pay, compared with 31% of Millennials (1981-1996), 23% of Gen X (1965-1980), and 18% of Boomers (1946-1964).

Tap to pay using consumer devices has been in development for years with MagicCube Inc. an early developer on Android devices.

Though well-known as a Web registrar, GoDaddy is no payments newbie. It acquired point-of-sale equipment maker Poynt Inc. in 2020. Since then, it launched Payable Domains in 2023, a service that lets businesses accept payments through a registered domain name, and GoDaddy Payments in 2021. In 2023, GoDaddy said it would integrate Paze, a new online checkout wallet set to deploy in 2024 from Early Warning Services LLC.
