Transit System Adopts Mobile Payment Service

Bus riders in Indiana, Pa., can now use smart cards to pay their fares with the debut of the transit system’s IndiGO Mobile Pay.

Boston-based Modeshift Inc. designed the fare-collection system in conjunction with the Indiana County Transit Authority. Riders can use a mobile app to find routes, buy tickets and passes, and display a QR code to validate their fare when boarding a bus. Both iOS and Android versions are available.

Other features of the new fare system include an online portal to plan trips and fare purchases, and the ability to create personalized profiles to manage payment cards that also can be used to pay for fares. Riders also can tap IndiGo smart cards to pay for fares on buses. IndiGO currently uses account-based closed-loop cards, but will add contactless EMV open-loop payments in 2025, a Modeshift spokesperson tells Digital Transactions News.

IndiGO says its cash fares will increase in 2025, but Web, app, and card users will continue to pay current rates.

The new system simplifies the ways riders can pay for fares, John Kanyan, IndiGO executive director, says in a statement. “IndiGO Mobile Pay reflects our ongoing commitment to providing accessible, user-friendly solutions that make everyday travel smoother and more reliable.”

Modeshift says IndiGO is the ninth transit authority in Pennsylvania to work with it. In September Modeshift helped the Butler Transit Authority launch a digital-fate and data-collection platform called RideBTA. It also worked with the Berks Area Regional Transportation Authority in Reading, Pa., on its Go Mobile payment app.
