TrustCommerce’s Cloud Payments Targets Easier Health Care Payments

TrustCommerce says the first client to use its Cloud Payments integration with Epic Systems Corp.’s health-care software for card-present payments is now live.

Chicago-based TrustCommerce says The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is the first to use its Cloud Payments integration. Cloud Payments uses Android-based point-of-sale devices from PAX Technology Inc. that accept contact and contactless transactions, digital wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay, and fallback magnetic-stripe payments.

Making credit and debit card, and digital-wallet, acceptance easier in health care is important because that segment, according to the 2023 Healthcare Payments Insight Report from U.S. Bank, ranks fifth in terms of ease of making payments. Paying with a debit card at the point of service was the second most popular way to pay medical bills in 2022, the report says.

TrustCommerce says the integration, once configured, uses Wi-Fi or an ethernet connection to the terminal to securely connect the POS device with the health-care provider’s PC. This helps with faster implementations and easier troubleshooting and support, it says. No software install is needed on the location’s PC or server and a Web interface initiates the transaction activity with the POS terminals. Cloud Payments transactions are encrypted, TrustCommerce says.

TrustCommerce says it has had integrations with Verona, Wis.-based Epic since 2007. Epic says more than 325 million individuals have an electronic record in Epic and that more than 190 million patients use its MyChart service. The Epic integration follows TrustCommerce’s Cloud Payments integration with Practice Fusion, another electronic health records platform.
